When Marriott started developing the largest, most prestigious beach resort in St. Kitts, planners discovered there weren’t very many candidates capable of handling a project this big. They then came across Clearway. Soon after learning about Clearway’s expertise, skill and size, a contract was signed. As the Clearway team arrived, they knew trips home would be infrequent, to say the least. Sandy beaches, blue skies, crystal clear water would mitigate those initial feelings of homesickness. But this dream assignment would also come with a rude awakening.
The St. Kitts project proved to be a test for workers. One of the first tasks they noticed on the list was building a road in the water. Understandably jarred, the team quickly focused and got to work. For each of the St. Kitts projects, Clearway transported every piece of heavy equipment via ship and rail. One component of the project mandated construction of the resort’s ocean-side amenity feature. This involved construction of a sea wall and proper infrastructure to support and maintain it. Clearway built a road extending 300 metres from shore. Accomplishing this required hauling large rocks from a local quarry that eventually ran out of rock. Incredibly the job was completed thanks to resourcefulness, hard work through rigorous conditions, tight timelines and sometimes even working below sea level.
This was a trial of determination as the paradise assignment almost turned out to be a curse. Worker set out into the unforgiving sun each day and worked to construct a rock wall barrier to protect the shore from erosion. Enduring the blazing heat and countless revisions in planning, workers became obsessed over completing the major project. Not only did they manage, they completed the job to perfection.
Over at the port, the Clearway team set out to repair damage left in the wake of a hurricane. By hauling and dropping rocks that weighed up to 16-tonne into the port, Clearway ensured protection to the existing piers and new ones it created. Impressed with Clearway’s attention to detail and dedication, the resort also commissioned Clearway to build a dolphin park. Thanks to the commitment of its team, Clearway finished the job while helping raise the island’s tourism profile. As a result, the Royal St. Kitts Beach Resort has given the St. Kitts people even more pride as well as further economic sustainability.
